BGF Creative x Solange

BGF Creative x Solange

Early March, we were invited out to Houston, Texas by Sony Music to celebrate the launch of Solange’s album ‘When I Get Home’. The whirlwind few days involved having an opportunity to explore the city that Solange calls home.

We were taken on a bus tour around Houston to get up close and personal with the nine different locations that inspired Solange throughout the making of the album. This included the Houston Museum of African American Culture, Emancipation Park, Texas’ oldest park and the only park that was available for Black people to frequent during the Jim Crow era (now a community centre), and Unity National Bank, the only black owned banking institution in Texas.

The tour ended at SHAPE Community Centre where we watched a screening of the “When I Get Home” visual album. This was followed by a Q&A with Solange herself who explained more about the concepts and influences for the album, including the much overlooked narrative of the Black cowboy.

The trip was a truly exciting moment and what was most striking was the way that Solange brought the screening and the album to the very people who had inspired her: Black Houstonians, through screenings held across the nine locations that were open to the public. Solange well and truly brought this album home.
