BGF Becoming Festival

A FREE 3-day festival in partnership with Penguin and inspired by the themes of Michelle Obama’s memoir.

In April, we launched a special festival with Penguin, BGF x Becoming Festival, which was around the themes of Michelle Obama’s bestselling memoir, Becoming. The free festival took place at Canada Water Library across Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 And Thursday 11 April, packed with talks and workshops around mental health, history lessons on Black British feminism, creative writing and more, specifically aimed more towards 11-18 year olds.

Across the three days, peakers included Diane Abbott MP, the Shadow Home Secretary; best-selling novelist Dorothy Koomsom and Yomi Adegoke and Elizabeth Uviebinené, authors of the bestselling Black Girl bible ‘Slay in Your Lane’. The festival saw Black women and girls of all ages step through the doors of the library during half-term to celebrate themes of resilience, education, and empowerment.
